Morning & Daytime Croatian Courses in Rijeka for Expats
21. siječnja 2026.You’ve decided to enroll in a course, but for the first time, you are encountering labels like language level A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 and don’t understand what they mean.
These labels actually represent the levels of proficiency in a specific foreign language, where A1 is the beginner level and C2 is the highest level, i.e., native speaker proficiency.
In 2001, a document describing language competence across six levels was published for the first time. The document is called the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, abbreviated as CEFR. Its main goal is to describe foreign language proficiency in an objective manner. It contributes to the transparency of teaching, programs, and certificates. By establishing objective criteria for describing language competence, it facilitates the mutual recognition of qualifications acquired in different educational contexts, thereby easing the free movement of people within Europe.
All foreign language courses for adults at the OMNIA Language Center are aligned with the CEFR.
BEGINNER A1 level (Beginner)
Min. 100 academic hours (modul A1.1 – 50 (4 months) + modul A1.2 – 50 (4 months) At this level, the learner can exchange basic information with a conversation partner, ask questions and understand answers, use simple phrases and sentences, write a postcard or short message, and read very short, simple texts.
You must complete both modules to get the A1 level certificate.
BEGINNER A2 (Waystage)
Min. 100 academic hours (modul A2.1 – 50 (4 months) + modul A2.2 – 50 (4 months) The learner begins to understand the tense system, can talk about themselves and their past, and convey basic information in writing. Although they do not yet understand enough to maintain a conversation, the learner can use simple expressions to describe themselves, their family, living conditions, and similar topics.
You must complete both modules to get the A2 level certificate.
INDEPENDENT B1 (Threshold)
Min. 200 academic hours (B1.1 – 50 + B1.2 – 50 + B1.3 – 50 + B1.4 – 50) The learner can understand and use various language functions without preparation when providing and seeking information or recounting events, book plots, or movies. They can communicate simply in writing, though it remains noticeable that the text was not written by a native speaker. Additionally, a speaker at this level can handle most situations while traveling in a foreign country.
You must complete all modules to get the B1 level certificate.
INDEPENDENT B2 (Vantage)
Min. 100 academic hours (B2.1 – 50 + B2.2 – 50) The learner can communicate very well in the foreign language and maintain a satisfactory conversation with a native speaker. There are no major problems with understanding. They can understand most TV news and movies in standard language, participate in discussions on familiar topics, and express their opinions. Written language begins to resemble that of a native speaker.
ADVANCED C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency)
Min.200 academic hours (C1.1 – 50 + C1.2 – 50 + C1.3 – 50 + C1.4 – 50) The learner has reached an enviable level of foreign language proficiency. They have a very good command of all essential linguistic forms and can precisely formulate and convey ideas and opinions to others. The language can be used successfully for social and professional purposes. They can understand TV programs, movies, and even specialized articles without difficulty.
